Undermind 2 Image Submission

Undermind 2 is self-indexing, and therefore submissions must be arranged and named in a certain way.

On navigation screens, Undermind 2 uses large thumbnails which Mike refers to as "Trolls’nails". These must be 100 pixels high, and 130 pixels across. Normal thumbnails can be any size, but I strongly recommend 80 pixels high.

Submitting Image Galleries

If you wish to submit an image gallery to Undermind 2, here are the quick and simple steps to doing so:

Before you start, filenames and folder names should all be in lower case, and with underscores ( _ ) instead of spaces. Apostrophes are allowed. At the moment, only JPEGs are supported.

If the full-size images are much larger than the average screen, they will be scaled down before publishing in order to make the experience faster for readers. It will of course be easier to submit them if you scale them down BEFORE sending them.

If there is too much to submit in one go, feel free to create several smaller submissions, and we can merge them.

Step-by-step guide to submitting

Please read through all of this before you attempt it.

  • Create a folder called ‘gallery’ to put your stuff in.
  • Put your images, (making sure they are named as described above) into ‘gallery’.
  • If you want any of your images to have text descriptions displayed under them, create a sub-folder called ‘descriptions’ in ‘gallery’.
  • To make a description for an image, simply create a text file in the ‘descriptions’ folder with the same name as the image (just my_image.txt instead of my_image.jpg, obviously,) and write the description in the text file.

Categories

To keep galleries tidy, it is possible to break them up into ‘categories.’ If you want to create a category, say, ‘Summer Holiday’, simply do the following:

  • Create a folder for the category in ‘gallery’. It must be named ‘category_categoryname’. Replace categoryname with the name of the category, sticking to the same naming rules as above.
  • The way to set up a category is identical to that for a gallery, so simply follow the instructions above, but with ‘category_whatever’ instead of ‘gallery’.

Setting up a Gallery

As well as images within them, galleries have a name, an image, and a description. If you wish to add or change these things, or if you are creating a new gallery, you must do the following

  • To name the gallery, simply rename the 'gallery' folder to, for example, 'gallery_bob's_photos'. The usual naming rules apply.
  • To give the gallery an image, create a jpeg that is 100 pixels high and 130 wide, and give it the same name as the gallery, e.g. bob's_photos.jpg
  • To give the gallery a description, create a text file with the same name as the gallery, e.g. bob's_photos.txt, and enter the description into it.
  • Include the text and jpeg files in the final submission file, and the webmaster will ensure it ends up in the right place.

When you have finished, please compress the gallery folder and everything within it. On Windows you can just select everything you want to compress, right-click, and choose (Compress to zipped archive). RAR is perfectly acceptable too, if you're that kind of person.
